Equine Feed Bank Program Started
February 8, 2013
The Wisconsin Horse Council (WHC) has initiated a program to assist families and individuals that have fallen on temporary hard times in providing feed for their horses and/or other equine. The WHC recognizes that the economic down turn accompanied by increasing feed costs has put some families and their equine under significant stress. This can result in declining equine health and increased concerns about their management. The Wisconsin Equine Feed Bank Program (WEFB) is intended to assist in supporting continued proper care of equine and reduce stress on equine owners who are experiencing temporary hardships.
The WEFB program is available to private equine owners whose ability to properly feed their equine is temporarily limited because of job loss, health problems or other factors. It is not available to equine businesses and horse rescue operations. The program will provide feed for up to four (4) horses for up to six (6) months. Participation in the program requires completion of an application that provides information about factors creating this need and information about current equine management. Applicants are required to sign a release waiver that relinquishes all liability associated with donated feeds. They must also agree to develop an action plan to address long term equine management needs and/or transfer of equine ownership.
If you are experiencing hardships that are limiting your ability to properly care for your equine you may want to apply for temporary assistance through the WEFB program. If you know someone who needs temporary assistance to provide adequate feed for their equine please share information about this support program with them.
The success of this program will be dependent on donations of feed and money to support equine that are in need. Donations should be made to the Wisconsin Horse Council Equine Foundation, P.O. Box 351 Columbus, WI 53925. All donations are tax deductible. The Wisconsin Equine Foundation is a 501(c3) non-profit organization.
